A Sound Mind

Today, one in five children around the world is struggling with some or the other form of mental health issues. The diagnoses may take any form; depression and anxiety being one of them. Mental health is one of the most imperative parts of human health, but unfortunately, it has not been given enough emphasis. These things if left untreated can cause serious complications in the future and then it may be too late. According to a U.S. survey, children by the age of 10 have developed some kind of behavioral disorder, however, only half of these children are able to get complete treatment. This can lead to chronic mental illness which can affect their entire adulthood. In fact, untreated mental illnesses have caused a great loss of jobs and livelihood, and in the case of high order risk scenarios, it may lead to suicides or worse.

Mental health is a concentrated problem. The youth is particularly more vulnerable to this phenomenon. Various research has revealed that 50% to 70% of youth are prone to some sort of mental health issue. This can worsen if the child gets into habits like substance abuse, drug intake, etc.

Mental health is often known as a taboo in many countries including India. People are not comfortable opening about themselves in public. And if they do, they are sometimes ridiculed. This hampers the conversation about mental health. Many countries have a specific intervention when it comes to this. If a person happens to impose a direct or indirect threat on him or others, he is immediately put in psychiatric hospitalization. This can be quite traumatic for people, especially young adults. The treatment also plays an important role. Sometimes in severe cases, the patient is often asked to move out of his home for a residential stay in the hospital, which can be mentally and emotionally traumatic for a child. Living without a parent or a loved one can incapacitate the mental well being more and induce stress and anxiety within the child.
